Hidden Costs in Bridal Makeup Packages: What to Expect

Trial Session Fees

Most professional artists recommend (or require) a bridal makeup trial before the wedding. This is a separate 2.5 to 3 hour sitting using the same premium products. Some artists include the trial in the bridal package. Others charge it separately, typically ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 depending on the artist and products used.

What to ask: “Is the trial included in the package or charged separately? If separate, is the trial fee adjusted if I book the bridal package?” Some artists credit the trial fee toward the final booking. Others do not. Clarify this before the trial.

Travel Charges

Most bridal makeup artists in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai travel to the bride’s home or getting-ready venue. If the venue is within the artist’s base area, travel may be included. If it is farther, travel charges apply. These are calculated either as a flat fee or per-kilometre rate, and they cover fuel, tolls, and travel time.

For destination weddings (Goa, Lonavala, Alibaug, Jaipur), travel costs escalate significantly: flight or train tickets, accommodation for one or two nights, local transfers, and meals. These are almost always paid by the bride’s family in addition to the base makeup fee.

What to ask: “What is your travel policy? Is travel within Navi Mumbai included? What are the charges for my specific venue location? For a destination wedding, what travel and accommodation costs should I budget for?”

Early Morning and Late Night Surcharges

Many Mumbai weddings have early morning muhurats (4 AM to 6 AM start times) or late-night receptions. If your makeup session needs to start before 6 AM or extend past 10 PM, some artists charge an additional ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for the inconvenience and scheduling disruption.

What to ask: “My ceremony starts at [time]. What time would you need to start makeup? Does that timing incur any additional charges?”

Additional Looks or Outfit Changes

Standard bridal packages typically cover one complete look: one set of makeup, one hairstyle, and one draping. If you need separate looks for different ceremonies (wedding ceremony, reception, sangeet) or even a mid-event look change (different lip colour, hairstyle change for reception), each additional look is charged separately.

Additional looks typically cost ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 each, depending on the complexity and whether it is a full redo or a partial refresh. Even something that seems minor, like changing the lip colour and re-pinning the dupatta, takes time and products.

What to ask: “How many looks does your package include? What is the cost for each additional look? Can I get a bundled rate if I book multiple events together?”

Assistant and Team Fees

Senior bridal makeup artists often bring one or two assistants for hairstyling, draping, or supporting the main application. Their fees may or may not be included in the base quote. If the artist is also doing makeup for family members (mother of the bride, bridesmaids), they may bring additional team members whose charges are separate.

What to ask: “Do you work alone or with a team? Are assistant charges included in the quoted price? If family members need makeup, what is the per-person rate?”

Hair Extensions and Accessories

Hairstyling is usually included in bridal packages, but hair extensions, hair padding, decorative pins, tiaras, or fresh flower arrangements are often charged separately. Hair extension rental can add ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. Fresh flowers (gajra, jasmine strings) are sometimes provided by the bride’s family and sometimes sourced by the artist at an additional cost.

What to ask: “Are hair extensions and accessories included? If I want fresh flowers in my hair, do you source them or should I arrange that separately? What additional accessories might be needed and what do they cost?”

GST and Service Tax

Many brides forget to factor in GST (Goods and Services Tax), which can add 5 to 18 percent to the total bill depending on the artist’s registration status and billing method. Some artists quote inclusive of GST. Others quote the base price and add GST separately on the invoice.

What to ask: “Is your quoted price inclusive of GST? If not, what is the total amount including all taxes?”

Destination Wedding Premium

Beyond travel and accommodation costs, some artists charge a “destination premium” for weddings outside their home city. This compensates for the days blocked (the artist cannot take other bookings), the inconvenience of packing and transporting a full professional kit, and the additional coordination required. This premium can be 10 to 30 percent above the standard rate, separate from actual travel expenses.

What to ask: “Do you charge a destination premium in addition to travel and accommodation? If so, what is the total all-inclusive cost for my destination wedding?”

How I Handle Pricing

I believe in transparent, upfront pricing. When a bride contacts me, I provide an itemised quote that breaks down every component: the base bridal look, trial fee, travel (if applicable), additional looks, assistant charges, and any extras. The quote includes GST. There are no surprise additions on the invoice.

My standard bridal package includes HD makeup, hairstyling, saree or lehenga draping, false lashes, hair accessories, and a touch-up kit. The trial is a separate session with its own fee. Travel within Navi Mumbai is included. For venues outside Navi Mumbai, I quote travel charges based on the location.

I also offer combined quotes for brides booking multiple events (engagement + wedding, or wedding + reception). Bundling events usually works out more cost-effective than booking each separately.
